Every now and then I get an urge to shout this out in the hope some Spoonlet will come scurrying along , usually when i'm getting cramp in my neck and need a shoulder rub or my knife needs sharpening and I don't want to get my hands dirty. It certainly would be nice to have some help around the place and someone who has to listen to me talk obsessively about spoons all the time.
You'd need to be someone who is planning on carving spoons professionally, someone who will work very hard at being a good carver, you need to have a love of trees and wood, you need to want to make useful spoons, you need to have a good awareness of what you think is beautiful. You should be able to hammer a nail without hitting your thumb every time, and good at drawing or neat handwriting will also help you.
I am looking for someone to come to me for a maximum of 3 days a week to work in exchange for learning, I will not be paying your national insurance etc but there will be perks. This role can be flexible for you as long as you can be flexible too.
Does the fact that there are no comments here mean that you've had no takers for your offer of apprentice? If so, I'm amazed - I'd do it at the drop of a hat if it wasn't for the mortgage, wife and four kids. If you think the apprenticeship could sustain us all, please consider this a formal application; if not, then whoever takes up your offer (and is subsequently 'taken up' by you) is a very lucky person. I love your spoons. good luck, Richard Heath
ReplyDeleteI wish i could support you all! someday maybe.
ReplyDeleteApprentice seeking is going very well, I have very many responses most are not right for it, but there are several that would be excellent it is just a case of trying to figure out how to make it work.
One thing that is a real shame is that i can't find the right person in London which seems ridiculous.
I would quite like to apply, but I'm living in Alaska for the foreseeable future so that's not going to work. Good luck finding someone!
ReplyDeleteI think its incredible that no-one has snatched this opportunity with both hands - I would love to do it, but alas, I am up north and not in a position to relocate - yet. I hope you find a superb apprentice and someone as crazy about spoons as you clearly are - brilliant. Greg Wood
ReplyDeleteHi Barn, just watched the wee clip the BBC put on their site about you. You are a star. As you know, we live in a world where complexity is very over valued and your honesty and integrity shine through this miasma like a lighthouse of hope for all sane people in this crazy world.
ReplyDeleteWishing you all the very best of intentions for now and the future.
My niece would be a perfect apprentice for you but she lives in NJ, USA. However, I suspect she'd relocate to London for the right opportunity. I will tell her about this.
ReplyDeleteHi, i've recently become aware of you and your work through the piece on the bbc website, I really admire your work and I agree that it is in fact very cool! How would one go about applying to be your apprentice? Sounds like an exciting opportunity!
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Elliot
