Tumblr

I now have some photos of spoons on Tumblr barnthespoon.tumblr.com some of these photos you may have seen on my blog and many are from my facebook account which i have now closed. i intend to keep the tumblr account just photos of spoons. Tumblr is much better for photos than blogger so i hope to be updating them quite frequently but there will not be much if any information with them just photos. I'll post tomorrow morning about knives.

  1. Barn,
Thanks for posting all those photos up! Among others, I often seek design inspiration from your spoons. I really like your philosophy of simplifying the spoon design to its most essential elements. One thing that I'm curious to hear about is some information on your large runs of spoons. Things like roughly how long you spend on each one when you are carving a dozen or more of the same design, how you group steps in the process, etc.

Also, looking forward to hearing any more information you have distilled from the class with Fritiof.

    Thanks very much.

  2. Hi Simon, don't know whether you saw i added a tiny bit to the post below. In terms of mass production the vast majority of my spoons i have produced out in some random wood, i saw the bit of wood off a tree or cut down a small one (sometimes at night if i'm worried about the noise), then saw it up into lengths i use a standard builders jacksaw. split them up (i carry a gransfors wildlife hatchet but anything will do), axe them out into blanks as small as possible, then pack them up and take them to town/city where i display whatever finished spoons i've got whilst carving the new ones first with straight knife then hollow out. i'll do a more detailed post about this some time and explain what i do when i've got chainsaw/ axe block/ shave horse/ drawknife.
