New Spoons!

Well i promised i would post some spoon photos i know you don't really want to hear about nutmeg and aftershave. These three spoons were given as christmas presents to my family. They are three different solutions to the same problem of how to get the food from your bowl to your mouth, on the grand scheme of things they are all very similar. They are made from Hawthorn, Field Maple, Hawthorn. In the New year i will post photos of spoons more regularly and would enjoy any feedback.

  2. I like the little shoulders on the bowl of the leftmost one and the way they reflect those on the bottom of the handle.

  3. thanks, a lot of the swedish style spoons leave shoulders on as it is quick and easy to create something that looks symetrical. But it was up at Rob Wood's place where he had a spoon made by... (i've forgotten i'm afraid) that had very pronounced shoulders that would have followed a ghost line all the way up the handle like on this one. It works well, i often think of it as your eyes following lines. By manipulating where the surfaces of two facets meet you create a line, some are more pleasing than others but the eyes always look for them. This is particularly interesting to me in this case where the eyes imagine a ghost line where there is none, you can then get best of both where the spoon looks delicate but also flowing it's like two spoons in one. The One on the left is a regular style i make, but the other two are what i describe as Wille Sundquist style, they have a hollow top to the handle which is comfortable for the thumb and the "keel" is on the top of the neck not the bottom, this is a very clever design and all the spoons i've made the last couple of months, since seeing some more Wille Sundquist spoons at Mr Woods place, are this style.

  4. Mr Barn,

Sorry it took me so long to get back, I'm out here in Afghanistan and as you might imagine, things get hectic on occasion. Anyhow I have spotlighted you on this coming Saturday's 1/22 Blog Rodeo! Hope you get a chance to stop by!

    Best regards,
